Easter!

Greetings Platypuses!

I hope you’ve been enjoying the first few days of your holiday and especially anything Easter-themed if you celebrate it.

This week we finished our Space topic. Between me being away and it being the end of term so we were super busy doing things like making fabulous Easter baskets I find there is always more I wish we could have explored doing our Space topic! However there is always more learning that you can do at home 🙂

What do astronauts do?

Do you know who the first man on the moon was? (Neil Armstrong)

Do you know which 2 animals were sent up into space before any people were sent up? (A monkey called Albert II and a dog called Laika)

Do you know what job Neil Armstrong did before he became an astronaut? (He was a pilot)

Which country was the USA competing against in a competition to get a man on the moon first? (Russia)

Which planets can you name? (My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets is the mnemonic I use to help me remember – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto – Pluto is a dwarf planet though)

What facts do you know about the planets?

What orbits (goes around) what when it comes to these three things: Sun, Earth, Moon?

(The Earth goes around the Sun and the Moon goes around Earth)

The Moon: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zy89wmn

Bitesize Learning Clips are a fantastic resource for learning about the planets, why not watch a video a day? http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/topics/zdbbkqt/resources/1

Here is our Easter playlist featuring my favourite video of the extremely cute and cheeky Hatchlings 🙂

Now here is our Spring playlist – look out for more and more signs of Spring as the holiday progresses.

To reinforce your religious Easter learning this playlist will help:

Our topic next term is minibeasts — what can you find out about them?

I hope you are enjoying the beginning of your Easter break and have a fantastic 2 weeks of fun. Hopefully you will have the chance to go to the park, maybe visit some other places too, here are some suggestions…

The Magic Paintbrush and E-safety

Greetings Platypuses,

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We have heard two different versions of The Magic Paintbrush. One was read to you and one we watched – which one did you prefer (like more) and why? Can you remember some of the differences (some things that were different/not the same) and some of the similarities (things that were the same/very alike)?

An important focus for us this week has been e-safety as it was Safer Internet Day on Tuesday. E-safety is all about staying safe on the internet. Talk to your adult about what you learnt this week and remember to always ask them if you aren’t sure about something.

In maths we have been learning all about shapes, especially 3D shapes.

Can you identify some 3D shapes around you right now? (a box is a cuboid, a can/tin is a cylinder, a ball is a sphere etc.)

We have also been learning about Chinese New Year and had such fun making Chinese lanterns! We learnt about the Zodiac story and saw how people celebrate Chinese New Year. On the playlist below you will be able to learn some more about the celebrations and also watch some Chinese New Year folk tales.

It will be Green Team‘s turn for Show and Tell on Tuesday. Please only bring in toys when it is your colour team’s turn for Show and Tell as they can easily get lost 😦

Homework is due in on Mondays

Please wear your PE kit on Monday and make sure all your belongings (school uniform, PE kit, book bag etc.) have your name in/on them.

I hope you enjoy a wonderful weekend full of exploring, reading, writing, sleeping, eating, singing, dancing, homework, talking and of course don’t forget to comment on the blog! Oooh do some mathletics too!

An early start on Christmas!

Greetings Platypuses,

I am rather a fan of Christmas so we have started our festivities a little early in Reception!

We have been learning about the nativity story and have also listened to a fun story called Norman the Slug who Saved Christmas!

Where was baby Jesus born? (in a stable in Bethlehem)

Who visited baby Jesus after he was born? (the shepherds and 3 wise men)

Who was baby Jesus the son of? (Mary and God)

What did Norman the slug use to re-wrap the presents? (his slime)

What did he make out of the wooden sign that he used to deliver the presents? (a sleigh)

Who helped him? (the snails who acted liked reindeer)

Next week we will be learning more about doubling in maths and how to write a letter in literacy.

If you would like to attend our school Christmas Carol Concert and Nativity Tableau then the tickets go on sale on Monday. They are £1 and the shows are the week before the end of term – Thursday 13th and Friday 14th at 2pm.

It will be Green Team‘s turn for Show and Tell on Tuesday. Please only bring in toys when it is your colour team’s turn for Show and Tell as they can easily get lost 😦

Please wear your PE kit on Monday and make sure all your belongings (school uniform, PE kit, book bag etc.) have your name in/on them.

Homework is now due on Mondays.

Big Rain Coming + Anti-bullying Week

Greetings Platypuses,

What an exciting week we had with storms and floods and storm shelters!

What is a flood?

We spent time doing independent writing and challenge writing in our shelter from the rain and wrote instructions on how to get ready for wet weather and how to build a shelter. We also began to learn about the story of Noah – you can watch some different versions of it on the playlist below and sing the great counting song as well.

This week we have been talking about bullying and what to do if someone starts to bully us or someone we know. We decorated outlines of hands and wrote the names of people we would talk to on them.

You have the right to be protected from being hurt or mistreated, in body or mind – Article 19, Rights of a Child.

Watch the videos below and talk about them with your adults and other family members.

In maths we have been learning about capacity. What can you say about the capacity of different containers in your home?

Thank you everyone for your contributions on Monday.

It will be Red Team‘s turn for Show and Tell on Tuesday. Please only bring in toys when it is your colour team’s turn for Show and Tell as they can easily get lost 😦

Please wear your PE kit on Monday and make sure all your belongings (school uniform, PE kit, book bag etc.) have your name in/on them.

Remember homework is due in on Tuesday

Have a wonderful weekend full of exploring, reading, writing, sleeping, eating, singing, dancing, playing, talking and of course don’t forget to comment on the blog!

Rama and Sita + shapes!

Greetings Platypuses!

This term our topic is Weather and Festivals and we started it this week by learning about Diwali.

Check out the CBeebies link and the playlist below to rewatch the story of Rama and Sita and to learn more about Diwali celebrations. Like many stories belonging to different religions the story of Rama and Sita celebrates good triumphing (winning) over evil. Can you think of any other stories you know where this happens?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/lets-celebrate-diwali?collection=lets-celebrate-celebrations

What do people do at Diwali to celebrate?

Can you name one thing they decorate with?

Which religions celebrate Diwali? (Hindus and Sikhs

Can you retell the story of Rama and Sita

How would you feel if you had to go into the forest full of demons? What would you do to survive

In maths this week we have been learning about shapes

How many different 2D shapes can you name?

How many sides does a square have? How many sides does a rectangle have? What is the difference between them? (a square has sides all the same length but a rectangle has 2 short and 2 long sides)

How many 3D shapes can you name?

Can you find identify some 3D shapes around the home?

It will be Green Team‘s turn for Show and Tell on Tuesday. Please bring one toy/picture/item of choice if you would like to. Please only bring in toys when it is your colour team’s turn for Show and Tell as they can easily get lost 😦

Please wear your PE kit on Monday and make sure all your belongings (school uniform, PE kit, book bag etc.) have your name in/on them.

I hope you have a lovely weekend full of exploring, reading, writing, sleeping, eating, singing, dancing, playing and your fabulous phonics homework!  Make sure you comment on the blog!
